"In spite of Ehwald's opinion, no modern student of Anglo-Saxon diplomatic would consider any of the five as authentic. Nevertheless, two of these charters have an especial claim to the attention of students of Aldhelm: they are written in a Latin style which is unmistakeably 'Aldhelmian'. For this reason, enthusiastic attempts have been made to claim the charters for Aldhelm, notebly by Hahn and Bönhoff, and Ehwald similarly chose to believe that these two charters in question bear a striking resemblance to Aldhelm's other prose works, but as A. S. Cook demonstrated with reference to the first of these (the donation by Leuthere), the resemblance derives from the fact that these charters ara each a confection of phrases from Aldhelm's other works carefully stitched together. Accordingly, although these charters might perhaps preserve some authentic basis, their present form derives from the industry of a later imitator, not from Aldhelm himself."
