"Ehwald identifies Æthilwald with Æthilbald, king of the Mercians (716-57). The identification rests upon no firmer evidence than that King Æthilbald received a letter from Boniface worning him of youthful excesses in a fashion reminiscent of the letter sent by Aldhelm to his student on the same subject. However, the identification is impossible on the grounds that - w- and -b- are not interchangeable in Old English. All that we know with certainty about this Æthilwald is that he was the author of some of the Carmina Rhythmica (Nos. ii-v), printed by Ehwald (pp. 528-37)." [Lapidge/Herren (1979), S. 147f.] |
