"It is evident that Aldhelm wished to complete the list of apostles commemorated in CE IV, and that the poem on Matthias was composed as a sort of appendix. It is unlikely, therefore, to have been intended as a titulus for an actual church or altar. It is also worth noting that in two of the three principal surviving manuscripts of CE IV the poem on Matthias is found interpolated into the sequence of poems that is CE IV (see Ehwald's apparatus), so that it follows the poem on Thaddeus (IV.xii) and precedes the verse epilogue (IV.xiii); it is possible that this order reflects Aldhelm's original intentions."
